The free offerings from Avast, AVG, Avira, Bitdefender and Panda all offer basic antivirus and anti-malware protection, giving you a good chance to keep your PC free of threats.

Free AVG 2017 is available online now, and it includes some must-have updates to keep you safe. In addition to real-time protection, AVG offers real-time security updates as well as real-time download protection too.

AV-Test’s results from testing in July-August showed that its protection was above the industry average and awarded it 5.5 out of 6. It was given the same high score for usability. The Pro version adds blocking for fake websites, phishing emails and has an enhanced firewall to block malicious internet traffic.

The Avast and AVG, newly combined company says the two free antivirus products will remain separate, although there's apparently a joint AV package on the way soon. Avast offers protection from unknown threats and a handy password manager so you can log into sites in your browser by remembering just one password.

Some of its cool features are, Excellent virus detection, Gaming mode, Password management. SE Labs currently rates it at 92 percent overall, down two points from the July-September 2016 tests. AV Comparatives found that it blocked 99.7 percent of threats in its September 2016 test. AV-Test rates protection, performance and usability, giving Avast 6.0, 3.5 and 6.0 out of 6 respectively from it's November-December 2016 tests.

Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition

BitDefender is another one with Key features like Fast scanning, Excellent virus detection, Phishing protection. The Free Edition's clean, light, well constructed. In fact, AV Comparatives awarded it the unbeatable score of 100 percent, successfully blocking all malware during its tests in September. There have been cases in the past of automatic systems going slightly rogue. AV-Test also praised Bitdefender, giving it full marks for protection and usability.

4. Avira Free Antivirus

Avira is popular antivirus program with well designed interface. The latest version includes a couple of new features in its SearchFree Toolbar: a website safety advisor and the option to block advertising companies from tracking you online. Avira Free Antivirus continues to score highly on AV-TEST's stringent testing program, quashing 99.7% of tested threats. It has Built-in VPN support, a 500MB/month VPN and various speedup promises.

File scans can be scheduled and by default there’s a quick scan set to repeat every week. The only reason it is not on top of the list is you get a lot of pops popups and advertisements. Yeah we get it it's a free product but it has crossed the line.

Sophos Home

Sophos Home is a new entry, Marketing itself as 'business-grade security', does a little more than most free antivirus software. Some features that distinguish Sophos Home from others are Parental controls and can Protects up to 10 PCs. This means you can effectively lock down your kids' browsing options. Although AV-TEST hasn't formally assessed Sophos' skills, fellow lab AV-Comparatives offers a decent rating of its antivirus abilities.
