Generation II has been released in Pokémon Go. And it has an additional 80 Pokémon roaming around in-game. This group of monsters ranges from common to not-so-common – to the downright impossible-to-find. Yes! One of the more unique Pokémon that exists in Generation II is Unown. Unown contains 26 variations that correspond with the 26 letters in the Latin Alphabet. They are so hard to find that players have rarely seen even one of them.
But some lucky trainers have happened upon individual Unown letters already, with a handful of sightings noted on Reddit. Where, exactly, anyone can expect to find all the different letters remains … well, unknown. All we can recommend is continuing to be intrepid in your Pokémon-collecting travels.
Here’s how Bulbipedia Describes it:
Unown is a Psychic-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II. While it is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, as of Generation III, Unown has 28 derivative shapes, chronicled in the Unown Mode in Generation II and the Unown Report in HeartGold and SoulSilver. There are 26 Latin alphabet characters, plus ? (question mark) and ! (exclamation mark) introduced in Generation III. In Generation II, its shape is determined by its individual values; in Generation III, it is determined by its personality value; from Generation IV onward, it is determined by a separate form identifier.
The Unown Medal
Unown Medal is only uncovered once one Unown is caught. Most users that’ve played every day since the first day of Gen 2 have not yet seen a single Unown. While some medals require that 100 of a single rare Pokemon be caught, this one is different. Because Unown is a single Pokemon with a limited set of variations, this medal requires that all 26 (of the first set) be caught to get the gold. The three levels for the medal are find 3, find 10, find 26.
- Bronze: Catch 3 Unowns, get a 1.1x bonus.
- Silver: Catch 10 Unowns, get a 1.2x bonus.
- Gold: Catch all 26 Unowns, get a 1.3x bonus.
You’ll need to catch a lot of Unowns to max it out. And it only credits you one for each form, so repeats don’t count.
Unown Hidden in the Code
Hardcore players explored! The first Unown is listed as the letter F, asset bundle value 16. Then asset bundle values 11-36 are A-Z, 37 is Question Mark, and 38 is Exclamation Point. At this time it does not appear that any letter is any more or less rare than any other.
How to Find and Catch Unown
Catching Unown is no big deal but first finding is!
It has a base capture rate of 0.3, roughly that of most Uncommon Pokemon, like Clefairy, Vulpix, Gloom, Growlithe, Scyther, and Jynx. Be sure to use a Razz Berry when you see it, of course, and an Ultra Ball. Unown is extremely rare, it could be that this Pokemon might be made more common during a special event in the future. They could be anywhere, at any time.
Are there nests where you can go to catch Unown?
Nou! Like Snorlax and Lapras, doesn’t seem to nest. There have been reports of consistent, if infrequent spawn points but they’re thus far very few and incredibly far between.
Can you track Unown in Pokémon Go?
If you can find a spawn near a PokéStop, you can absolutely track Unown using Nearby.
- Tap the Nearby Tab at the bottom right of the screen.
- Tap the holiday Pokémon you want to track.
- Then, tap the Footprints button to start tracking.
Once you get to the PokéStop, Unown will spawn and you can catch away!
