Xiaomi Mi MIX has caught the eye of many tech lovers in the mobile phones market because of its style. This stunning Xiaomi’s new smartphone/phablet has a special screen size 6.4 inches with full HD resolution of 2,040 x 1,080 and aspect ratio of 17:9. The screen is the size of the giant Xiaomi Max and the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro – except the screen covers almost the entire surface of the phone and that is a record so far. It basically has no edge since the left and the right side on the front of the phone is display.
“This is pretty much a handmade device,” said Xiaomi’s Hugo Barra at the company’s launch event in Beijing. “It’s a lot of new materials, a lot of new components that aren’t available and that were actually custom made for us,” he said while speaking to the media.
The phone is wrapped in glossy, black ceramic (which is the most resistant material to scratching and damage), with a 91.3 percent screen-to-body ratio. With only a little strip at bottom, means that the front camera is aimed upwards toward your chin instead of at your face (you can flip the phone), perhaps not a good news for selfie enthusiasts.
The corners of the Mi Mix’s screen are also curved, reminiscent of a Sharp prototype from 2014. There are also new technology inside the Mi Mix, piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology, which lets users listen to calls without an earpiece speaker. And another one, ultrasonic proximity sensor behind its display instead of a front-facing infrared proximity sensor.
About the hardware
MIX has Snapdragon 821 processor, two types of memory – one 4 GB + 128 GB and another with 6 GB, and 256 GB of internal memory. Both models come with a fingerprint sensor, a camera on the back of a resolution 16 megapixels (PDAF system, 4K video) and a five-megapixel camera on the front. The smartphone is equipped with a battery capacity of 4,400 mAh and is supported by Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging. On the MIX phone, one can find speakerphone and front camera at place where other smartphones have physical Android buttons.
Expected release date for Xiaomi’s new smartphone is November 4, 2016. Although Xiaomi Mi MIX is still just a concept (supplies will be very limited). The price will be around $570 (520 euros) for the model 4/128 GB up to $660 (600 euros) for the model 6/256 GB. Sales will start on November 4 via flash sale to consumers in China.
According to Hugo, the Mi Mix is an experimental phone for the company, albeit one with commercial intentions. However, in the future – “who knows, maybe next year, the year after that” – the company plans to take some of the Mix’s fancy features, such as the piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology, and bring them to its US$300 phone.
